As an electrician who’s helped many Pacific Northwest homeowners assess their actual needs, I spent months getting comfortable with when Level 1 charging works and when it doesn’t. What Level 1 Actually Delivers
Probably should have led about this area, honestly — Level 1 charging from a standard 120-volt outlet adds about 4-5 miles of range per hour. That’s roughly 40-50 miles overnight if you plug in for 10 hours. For many drivers, that’s enough.
When Level 1 Works Fine
If you drive less than 30-40 miles daily and can charge every night, Level 1 handles it. That’s what makes Level 1 endearing to us practical types — it requires zero installation cost and uses existing outlets.
Perfect for: short commutes, retired folks who mostly stay local, second vehicles, plug-in hybrids with small batteries.
When You Need More
If you regularly drive 50+ miles daily, Level 1 can’t keep up. You’d fall behind on charge each day and eventually run out. Longer commutes, frequent trips, or cars parked in shared lots without overnight access all point toward Level 2.
A Reasonable Approach
Start with Level 1 if your driving pattern might work. You can always install Level 2 later if you find yourself running short. The equipment costs money, but it’s not wasted — you can take it with you if you move.
For new EV owners unsure of their actual needs, trying Level 1 first provides real-world data before investing in a dedicated circuit and charger.
Safety Considerations
Use the charging cable that came with your car or a properly rated extension cord if needed. Avoid thin household extension cords — they can overheat with continuous high-current draw.
