Free EV charging has gotten complicated with all the different networks, apps, and retail partnerships flying around. As an electrician who installs charging infrastructure and talks with EV owners constantly, I learned everything there is to know about where free charging exists and whether it’s worth pursuing. Today, I’ll share it all with you.
Where Free Charging Exists
Probably should have led with this section, honestly — free charging is out there, but it’s scattered and not always convenient. The main sources:
Retail and Hospitality Locations
Hotels, shopping centers, movie theaters, and grocery stores sometimes offer free charging as a customer amenity. The idea is you’ll spend money while your car charges. That’s what makes retail charging endearing to business owners — it attracts customers.
Workplace Charging
Some employers provide free charging for employees. If your company has chargers in the parking lot, ask about access and costs. This benefit is becoming more common, especially at tech companies and environmentally-conscious businesses.
Municipal and Utility Programs
Some cities and utilities offer free or reduced-cost charging to promote EV adoption. Seattle City Light has programs; check your local utility for options.
Vehicle Purchase Perks
Some manufacturers include free charging credits with vehicle purchases. Tesla’s Supercharger network has offered various free charging promotions. These change frequently, so check current deals when buying.
The Practical Reality
Free public charging usually isn’t worth significant inconvenience. If you have to drive 15 minutes out of your way and wait for a charger, you’re not saving much compared to home charging.
Home charging at off-peak rates typically costs $1-3 for a full charge. Chasing free electricity rarely saves enough to justify the time invested unless you’re already at that location anyway.
Best Strategy
Install home charging for daily use — it’s convenient and cheap. Take advantage of free charging when it’s genuinely convenient, like at work or while shopping you’d do anyway. Don’t plan your life around finding free electrons.
